Striker crisis adds to Czech woes

The Czech Republic's surprise 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ghana on Saturday was worsened by a mounting crisis over a lack of available strikers.
First-choice forwards Jan Koller and Milan Baros have been ruled out of the group games with injuries and Vratislav Lokvenc will be suspended for the final group game against Italy after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament. A red card for one of the team's best defenders, Tomas Ujfalusi, makes matters even worse for a Czech team ahead of such a decisive game.

Coach Karel Bruckner declined to say how he would deal with the deepening line-up problems.

"We are going to leave these worries for later," Bruckner told reporters after the match. "We have yet to decide on the replacements but we need to bring young players in to strengthen the team."

Under pressure from an energetic Ghana team for the entire game, the Czech Republic looked a different side to the one that sparkled in midfield to crush the USA 3-0 in the previous group game.

Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech said his team's FIFA World Cup was not over yet despite the challenge of facing Italy without so many important players.

"We have played a few times against Italy with good results," said the Chelsea goalkeeper. We are still confident because we have our destiny in our own hands."

Did I expected too much?!

Warghhh...!!!
What happened to Germany? What happened to my Balla?!!! Or am I expecting too much?

I had been frustrated for the vast mojority of the match through a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Artur Boruc. What I can say;

The referee Luis Medina Cantalejo must be bored with the match as he gave out 7 yellow cards (KRZYNOWEK Jacek (POL) 3', SOBOLEWSKI Radoslaw (POL) 28', BALLACK Michael (GER) 58', ODONKOR David (GER) 68', METZELDER Christoph (GER) 70', SOBOLEWSKI Radoslaw (POL) 75', BORUC Artur (POL) 89') and a red card for the first time in this World Cup (SOBOLEWSKI Radoslaw (POL) 75' 2Y)

But last-gasp goal from substitute Oliver Neuville gave Germany their second successive Group A victory against Poland - endlich!!!
Germany left it as late as possible to claim the three points.

Last night match was totally AWESOME!! (USA:CZE) I tend to watch this match not because I'm fan to one of d team, but its because I hate 'd black' one!

I never expect d match will turn to be very exciting...with US playing like..... *hehehe...* but Czech maintain their movement very cool, as no effected by d way US played.

Tomas Rosicky (my new Hero! *Sorry Balla!) scored twice as the Czech Republic enjoyed an impressive 3-0 victory over the US.

"The Czech Republic started their Germany 2006 campaign in style with a 3-0 win over the USA in Gelsenkirchen on Monday, 12 June 2006.
Jan Koller gave the Czechs a dream start in the opening match in Group E by heading them in front after five minutes and Tomas Rosicky doubled their advantage with a superb swerving strike in nine minutes before the break.
Despite the setback of losing Koller to a hamstring injury, Karel Bruckner's men retained their grip on the game and Rosicky sealed the three points with his second goal on 76 minutes."

- FIFAworldcup.com

The US team displayed several nice combinations in midfield throughout the match, but they struggled to translate them into clear scoring opportunities. Czech Republic, meanwhile, did not create a host of chances but they had the quality to capatilise on the ones they did make for themselves.

my HERO - once in every 4 yr

"He's very massive, he's very strong, he's very talented"
Name:Michael Ballack
Place of Birth:
Görlitz, Germany
Date of Birth:
26 September, 1976
Position:
Midfielder
Importance to Team:9 out of 10

Why is he a key player?:

Michael Ballack is an intelligent midfielder with a delicate touch on the ball. Criticized for being 'lazy' on the pitch, Ballack proved that his seemingly slow gait in midfield was merely a case of the lion waiting to pounce. Goaltenders shudder at the thought of facing one of his powerful shots from outside the area.

Born in East Germany, Ballack broke into the Bundesliga at age 20 with Kaiserslautern. Clashes with then coach Otto Rehhagel prompted a 1999 transfer to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Ballack flourished under successive Leverkusen coaches Christoph Daum and Klaus Toppmoeller. The 2001/2002 season saw Ballack at his best as he took his side to the Champions League finals before losing out to Real Madrid. With Leverkusen finishing second in the Bundesliga, Ballack's 17 club goals earned him the German Player of the Year title. His first season with FC Bayern München was a success as the squad took the league title and Ballack once again won German Player of the Year.

At 27 Ballack is already a veteran on the international stage. Finishing second behind England in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifications, Ballack's three goals over two legs against the Ukraine were the saving grace for Germany. Ballack continued his quality play in Japan / South Korea, scoring three goals including the crucial semi-final strike against South Korea. His leadership and four goals carried Germany through the 2004 Eurocup qualifications, with his side finishing first in their group.

If Oliver Kahn is Germany's leader, Ballack is the field commander. The gritty midfielder must create the attacks, time his patented crunching defensive tackles, and inspire his teammates if Germany are to win a fourth European title. The same media that voted Ballack 'Germany's Sexiest Footballer' in 2002 will be merciless if he produces a lacklustre performance in Portugal.

Its time.... for all people in d world... to shout only a word...

GOAL!!!
Finally d time has come... FOOTBALL FEVER! The past couple of days in Berlin have seen rising temperatures and an increasing number of world cup fans descending on the city. Even though Malaysia never qualified in this cup, all Malaysian do feel the heat of WORLD CUP!
Talking about world cup, it is as already known that Brazil will give big impact on the game. It will be a surprise if Brazil do not win the competition. There are many good teams participating, but this year Brazil has a squad that will be hard to beat. An indication of this is that the brightest star of the Brazilian side is not Real Madrid’s Ronaldo, the two time World Cup winner and three time World Player of the Year. That distinction goes instead to Ronaldinho, an embodiment of the Brazilian football culture.
But to succeed in a tournament like this, one player, no matter how good, is not enough. Luckily for the Brazilians, they have plenty, and they know how to play together. But what about the defense? With the Milan goalkeeper Dida protecting the net, they do not have to worry about conceding easy goals. Two typically Brazilian issues, the clumsy central defenders and the full backs too eager to join the attack, may also have been solved. At least Cafu on the right and Roberto Carlos on the left cannot blame their mistakes on the inexperience of youth.
Hehe... I'm writing all this here just like I'm one of thousands of Brazil fan. Even though Brazil play very well, my full support is still with German! *Big grin*
Germany, although now lacking the brightest kind of star in their squad, have regularly done well in the World Cup. They do not have any specific weaknesses, and the home tournament could prove to be just the thing Michael Ballack needs to achieve legendary status.
German World Cup Squad:
Goalkeepers: Jens Lehmann (Arsenal/ENG), Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich) Timo Hildebrand (VfB Stuttgart).
Defenders: Arne Friedrich (Hertha Berlin), Robert Huth (Chelsea), Marcell Jansen (Borussia Monchengladbach), Per Mertesacker (Hannover), Christoph Metzelder (Borussia Dortmund), Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Jens Nowotny (Bayer Leverkusen).
Midfielders: Michael Ballack (Chelsea), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Tim Borowski (Werder Bremen), Torsten Frings (Werder Bremen), Sebastian Kehl (Borussia Dortmund), Bernd Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen), Thomas Hitzlsperger (VfB Stuttgart), David Odonkor (Borussia Dortmund).
Fowards: Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen), Lukas Podolski (FC Cologne), Mike Hanke (VfL Wolfsburg), Oliver Neuville (Borussia Monchengladbach), Gerald Asamoah (Schalke 04).
And above these all, my star is of course, Michael Ballack!
